Wifi
After reading the above link material, I understand the technical aspect of Wifi but not its financial side. Maybe Larry Kall or David Israel would know how much it would cost to Wifi Century Village? Considering how much each internet user in the village ( some 1500 according to another post ) is paying to each its own internet provider, maybe we should pull together for this solution. A second aspect is hotspots offered by some telephone companies. Is it an interesting opportunity for us? Andre

Since the vast majority of residents do not have computers it might be difficult to try to convince them to set up and maintain a network. CV residents can get high speed internet service for under $25 per month now.

ReplyDeleteActually, I made up a full Power Point Briefing an how to make the Village WiFi some time ago.
In essence it would involve setting up a Mesh network.
Selected Associations would agree to allow the installation of
RF Routers in their buildings which would be trans multiplexed onto the COMCAST Cable system.
Costs would be thus distributed across all Associations in CV and would have to be negotiated with COMCAST.
Lots of I's to dot and T's to cross, but definitely do-able.

ReplyDeleteLarry, the vast majority of people in the Village are not taking the bus and pay for it all year round eventhough it is almost empty in the summer months. There might be some saving to do in this budget item to allocate it to internet communication. Living in a community setting means that one must do what is best for all. Having an internet connection is a must now for a lot of people like TV was in the 1960 and 70.
Considering that we pay an average of $20.00 a month for cable and that the vast majority of people are not here more than 4 to 6 months a year makes it very expensive, considering that it is only basic TV. Why pay an extra $25.00 a month plus the hasstle for snowbirds of connecting and suspending service? Having it handy like comcast Tv would be great. Thanks Andre
Larry, the $25 a month that you are referring to is only for new subscribers, isn't it? Also is the $25 a month as fast?

The WiFi thing sounds great.
The ability to enter into a Cable agreement for the village was possible due to State legislation. I am not sure if High Speed Internet Service meets the same standard for a common element.
ReplyDeleteYes the special price for CV residents for $19.95 if for NEW customers only. After 6 months it goes to $24.95 per month. As far as I know the speed is fine for most people.
There is no way to know at this time what a WiFi network would cost. However I will discuss it with my contacts at Comcast to get more information.
Right now we are trying to sort out with Comcast the switch over to digital tv and what is involved for us.

A CV Wide WiFi system can be set up using the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network).

Bandwidth is not free.
This sort of connection would be implimented via Hi speed DSL.
If there is a serious effort to do Campus wide connectivity, we should also look at 4G WiMax.
