I feel faint, all this is just too much excitement for me Ed. Where are the smelling salts.
Thanks for the update Ed. I see the red bricks look a little better after the power wash, but as they were neglected for so long they will probably never look great. But its better than it was!
Like I said before it would look a lot better if they had painted the bricks white. It's not big bucks!
Now all you will have is a rehash of the 1970's vintage entrance.
I do not think that it is easy as just painting the red brick. The area has to be prepaid as was the area where the entrance signs were installed some years ago. There was
cement put over the brick.
In any case some people prefer the red brick. It appears that no matter what is done some people will like what is done and some people will not.
Hi Larry:
I think you are correct about painting brick--which can really just add to the maintenance burden. I just noted that even after the pressure cleaning, the brick has mildew stains. I appreciate UCO doing this much. Hopefully the broken tree lights are next.
Time to begin the UCO maiantenance budget process so the entrances can be cleaned again in another 2 1/2 years.
The contractor finished painting today. what an improvement....looks much better.

I was always concerned that some of the red brick at the Haverhill gate would show some marks even after cleaning as the marks have been there for years. I do however agree that the entrance does look better.
As far as the tree lights are concerned I discussed this matter with Pat Blunck today and he will have someone see what can be done about the lights that are out. The problem of the lights that were destroyed by cars is another is another matter. These are very expensive lights as they were designed to "grow" as the tops of the trees became higher and the bushes below grew higher. The best I can do is to suggest that the replacement of the broken lights and raising them be included in next years UCO budget. However I also know that there are many other maintenance items that will be requested in this same budget putting pressure on the UCO budget. Like all budgets some items will be approved, some not and some delayed.
My vote is for red brick, its honest and sturdy, we are humble and lovable. Note: red brick universities are point of pride in UK. I do not think the lumpy white paint anonymous is related to Candice Olson or any decorating expert. There may be an idea there, could we qualify for H&G TV reality do over?
