Palm Beach Mall

Dillards at the Palm Beach Mall is closing October 31, 2008. Many of you may not care, but to me it’s another loss for our community. I remember coming to the Palm Beach Mall well over 20 years ago, before I even lived here. It was a wonderful, thriving mall with Jordan Marsh, Burdines, Sear, Penny’s, many fabulous stores and great places to eat. You could go there any hour, any day and find many people strolling, shopping, just enjoying themselves.

I just can’t see how Penny’s, Sears and Macy’s will be able to hold on much longer with one less store. Oh sure, we still have Palm Beach Gardens and the Wellington Mall. They are a bit of a drive and you can’t consider them our neighborhood mall.

Maybe I’m overreacting, but to tell you the truth, I’m still grieving over the Outlet Mall and the Cross-County Mall. Now there was a good place to get a nice slice of pizza. Anybody remember? And then there was Freddie’s. Oh, how I loved Freddie’s. Anybody remember Freddie’s?

Oh well, as it’s been said, “times, they are a changin….”

I remember when the Mall opened. I was with Sears (on Dixie Highway) at the time.It really was the 1st Mall in WPB.
Progress ???? changes much doesn't it?
Betty & I take our CV bus to the Wellington Mall and it makes a very nice outing for us, same as Gardens Mall trip. There has been much talk about what they were going to do with the PB Mall but I think nothing has been decided as yet.

Hi Ken,
I think I know where the Sear's on Dixie use to be. Just a little north of Belvedere, if I'm remembering correctly. Do you happen to know what year the Palm Beach Mall opened? Kind of interesting trivia.
The outings that you and Betty take sound very nice. I'm glad to hear that.
Take care,
chris

I read an IKEA was supposed to go in the PB Mall after it was razed, but I don't know when.

I went to the opening of the PB Mall in late 67 or very early 68. The center piece was a two storey "oil drip" fountain right in front of the old Jordan Marsh store.

Hi Plcruise,
I had no idea the mall was that old. I started coming up to this area around 1978 when my sister moved here. It was the first indoor mall I had ever seen and it was beautiful. I remember that fountain. It was very impressive!
IKEA, progres???
thanks, chris

Hi All,

I seem to recall a movie theater at the back end of the Mall with $1.00 matinee screenings.

Having just come back from "Macys"
at the PBM, I'd like to share with
you, my brief encounter while shopping for Cosmetics...The store
was empty...more sales personel than shoppers...when the Store Mgr
came over to me, introduced himself
and had I found everything satisfactory, which of course I did.
I then asked what would become of
Macys, should the mall be closed
for renovation, to which he responded, they were prepared to
continue operating, throughout the
renovation..he also added it is
projected to be an "Open Mall"
which is not desirable in S.Fla.
so-o-o-o that's where it stands
for the time being.

I remember going to Burdines in downtown West Palm Beach in 1971. I thought the mall opened later than 1971. I also heard that they wanted to have an open mall concept like Legacy Place on PGA Blvd. I did read that everything is on hold due to the economy. When you go to the mall now you just don't know if the store you are going to will be open as so many have closed.

Yes, Burdines was a fixture in downtown WPB for many decades. They eventually opened a store the the PBM in the late 1970s too. That became Macy's much later. The old Burdines site in WPB is where the new city hall is going in.

It's very interesting to read this little bit of history. Does anybody remember when the CrossCounty Mall was thrieving? It wasn't in such good shape by the time I got here.
