‘We’ are overcutting, and overpaying $$. Falling for tree trimmers’ advertising to trim for hurricanes. (we were trimmed in February and again now 4 days of hurricane season left!)
The proper information is easily available from P&Z Landscaping, Mounts Botanical Garden, PB County Agents, and University of Florida IFAS Extension -
“Palms don’t need hurricane pruning. Palms are adapted to wind storms. Removing fronds is of no benefit and is detrimental to the palm. Even dying leaves benefit the health of the palm and should not be removed until completely brown. Only coconuts and large palm seeds should be removed during hurricane season.”

Drive around the village, huge amounts of green fronds are cut, look up at our poor shaved and mohawked palms.
Nothing is going to change for the better in Century Village until we start calling things and activities by their right name.
I am encouraged by the recent trend.
Now, if the palms were illegally cut, which criminal at UCO directed the trees to be illegally cut ?
I'd like to name names, but then Dave will delete the post. Dave seems to still be defending the old illegal ways of doing things.
But we all have a pretty good idea of who the culprit is.

If the landscape cos. hired to do the work didn't hire illegals, we wouldn't have this problem.
I hate to defend the illegal aliens, but for the most part they do what they are told. They are conscientious, respectful, but they really will ONLY do what they are told to do. They don't have the 248 years of industrial civilization to draw upon. So let's get back to WHO told them to illegally cut the palms.
Of course they are conscientious, respectful, and doing ONLY what they are told to do. I gave them the P&Z sheet for their boss on Saturday, yesterday they were charming as I retrieved coconuts for my consumption.
I do have an idea, the Beautification Cmte can invite P&Z Landscaping in to educate CV on saving money and healthy palms.
It is not a landscape company trimming the trees, it is Seacrest. Pat Plunk or Blunk is the person, I think, who would be telling them to cut. He should be be given the information to pass on. Thanks Elaine and Dave.

You need PZ&B Some of Beautification cmte have tried to stop the practice of mulching palm trees in Century Village to no avail. Palms should not be mulched up to the trunk because of the fungus Ganoderma Butt Rot which can kill ALL your palms once it invades the community.

Broward also bans candle or hurricane cutting of palms, they are code violations.
Bitching is not going to solve the problem; neither is UCO or Pat Blunk.
Call Palm Beach County Code Enforcement at 233-5500 and hope they will do something, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

You see why I'm so frustrated.
Ken Davis and Haskell Morin have both done astonishing amounts of real volunteer work for UCO, if you were closer to UCO you would know this. I have seen Haskell installing and repairing benches and signs for 7 years (he has probably done more) he also picks up trash on Haverhill. Would you do that for dirty ignorant people? UCO finally went over the line asking Haskell to work more for free. I am sure he is now very poorly paid and is still the best.
