I am smelling something very similar to the exhaust of a car in my condo. There is an a/c & heater unit under the windows in my livingroom which runs a lot this time of year . Could this be the cause of the smell? Mike

YES
YES
Yes, what
Your question was could a through the wall a/c unit cause a small to permeate into your unit. The answer is YES it could.
Is the smell coming from the unit or outside ? I have been here since 2001 and never had this happen. Would the unit be defective and in need of replacement? Thanks, Mike
Yes, call Village Mutual! Brace yourself.
I don't have a policy with Village mutual. I guess , I will just have to go buy a new unit.
I would not suggest that you buy a new unit until you are sure what the problem is.There could be some other cause. Step one , if your unit as a setting for outside air, close that and see if the smell continues. Could the odor be coming from some other part within the unit-possibly. Another suggestion would be shut the unit off for an hour or so , open some windows and see if the odor stops.
If the odor stops the culprit is most likely the a/c unit/
Odors sometimes come from the county sewage plant on 45 th street and are drawn in by the a/c.
Odors are some times very hard to track. Many times it is hit and miss.
Ok, Thanks, Larry
Mike: Do the cars park with the back towards your house? You mentioned that you live on the ground floor. A woman in our building complained of this and it turned out one of the people was parking his car numerous times with the engine running waiting for his wife or whatever while the exhaust was coming from the back of his car. They concluded that the air conditioner that you have that is through the wall or through the window will suck in that is right outside the window. Could this be possible in your situation?
Hi Anony 23, I'm on the 2nd floor and it doesn't seem like anyone is leaving their cars running. In the summer there are only a few cars coming and going from my association. Thanks for the info though. Mike
