Storm Prep Tips from FPL

Before the Storm

  • Develop an emergency plan including evacuation routes and special medical needs.
  • Update your FPL account phone number at www.FPL.com. This will expedite the response time to your phone call in the event of an outage.
  • Turn off and unplug a TV set before lowering a TV antenna or satellite dish. Avoid power lines.
  • Turn off and unplug any non-essential electrical equipment.
  • To keep food fresh in the event of a power outage, turn refrigerators and freezers to their coldest settings ahead of time.
  • In the event of a power outage, make sure you have a battery-operated radio, multiple flashlights, and a battery-operated fan along with extra batteries.
  • Put important documents in a waterproof container.
During the Storm
  • If your electricity goes off:
  • Freezer foods can last up to three days. They're safe to eat if they still have ice crystals at the center.
  • Post a list of contents on your freezer to minimum the times you open it.
After the Storm
  • Please be patient. Listen to your local radio news on a battery-powered radio for regular updates from FPL. Assume that FPL is aware of mass outages. However, if your neighbors have power and you don't, have your account number and call 1-800-4OUTAGE (1-800-468-8243).
  • For your safety, please stay away from fallen wire flooded areas and debris.
  • Please be careful to follow safe operating procedure for generators. Never run them inside your home.
  • Visually inspect the area around your electricity meter (outside). If you detect or suspect any damage call an electrician.

I noticed on Century Village's hurricane check list that the first thing to do was review your insurance policy. We don't have an insurance policy. Does Gladstone have the only copy ? How about posting it here.

I believe that is your personal Homeowners Insurance Policy which you are required by law to keep in force. Note, your Loss Assessment Coverage is required to be raised to $2000 in January ’09.

We are NOT required by law to keep it in force. Stop scaring the people or I'll never sell my unit!!!

Please be careful, effective 01 Jan. 2009 You must indeed acquire Homeowner insurance on your unit; in fact if you do not provide proof of said policy to the Association, they may acquire it in your name and Lien your unit to effect recovery. Please read the following:

Insurance policies issued to unit owners after January 1, 2009, must contain a provision that the policy is excess coverage over the amount recoverable under any other policy and include special assessment coverage of at least $2,000 per occurrence. The association must be named as an additional insured and loss payee on all casualty insurance policies issued in the condominium. Unit owners are required to provide to the association evidence of hazard and liability insurance upon request (but not more than once per year) and if not
provided, the association may purchase a policy of insurance on behalf of, and at the cost of, the unit owner. The association must be named as an additional insured and loss payee on all casualty policies issued to unit owners.

Read it and weep!!
