Internet Throughout CV

Is it possible to contract with an internet provider to install Wi Fi towers throughout CV that would make all 7k units internet capable? I assume it would be a lot cheaper than every unit being connected individually as is required now. This might not be worded correctly but I hope you techies get the drift. Mike

The BLOGMEISTER replies:

Deploying WiFi across the entire of CV is no major Technological problem. The total area of CV is about 1.1 Square miles.

Typical costs to WiFi such a space by a firm such as Motorola would be between $25,000.00 and $100,000.00.

However there are firms such as Meraki that would do it for circa $10K.

Please See: http://meraki.com/solutions/business/municipal/

Be sure to see the case studies in the right Sidebar.

Another approach might be to WiFi all of the pool areas, or to place equipment in a number of strategically located Association buildings, with their permission of course.

Hi Dave , The reaason for asking is I was talking to some older people who don't get out much and they told me there were a lot of older people who are isolated. I was thinking If we could Wi Fi them and they acquired a cheap laptop to comunication with their kids and grandkids and who knows who else. This would open up a whole new world for them . We could get volunteers to teach people how to do mail , get the newspaper , the blog.etc. Just my thoughts. A lot of these people can't get out to Wi Fi, thus the towers to cover all Unit. Mike

Is WiFi reasonably related to the general benefit of the unit owners such that it may be deemed a proper common expense? Would such a common expense mandated by the approval of the Delegate Assembly survive legal challenge?

Randall, That ? is above my paygrade.

As I recall the question of internet service as part of our Comcast contract was asked about at the Delegate Assembly. The answer given was that Comcast would require all of our units to subscribe and of course this would increase our monthly cost. It was pointed out that there are just 1500 internet users in CV and we would not get the residents to go along with the extra cost. This proposal for WiFi is truly the best way to go. If the costs are as noted by our Blogmeister, where do I sign up?
