SUNDAY NIGHT SING - A - LONG
Just wondering do we have bloggers, who enjoy singing?
The Sing a long, has been around for sometime...I believe begun by Angelo Amari, accomplished
Violinist, who on Special occasions, would bring his prized Stratovarious. He was accompanied
for a period of time, by piano players, some of whom volunteered their time, as Angelo did,
and a few who were paid through contributions, of those that attended. Song books, supplied
and paid for initially by Angelo were distributed....the assembled sang, selections chosen
by Angelo, for the first hour, and the second hour, was called "Showtime" in which individuals
made the selection, sang a stanza or two and encouraged audience participation.
At the end of the evening, everyone applauded, and left invigorated..
When Angelo, began to ail, Louis, began assisting him, and subesequently became the host,
when Angelo, could no longer. Louis, along with another sing a longer...Hector, re vamped
the program, by using today's technology....the computer, which allows them to down load
a variety of songs, and with the assistance of CV sound man, are able to project the lyrics
on a large screen, in Room C.....where the movies used to be shown.....
At the present time, due to many complaints lodged with Ms. Anita Cruz, the format has
been discontinued.... many people have taken the liberty of comparing this evening to
Kareokee, the only similarities, are the use of the microphone, and song selection....
In Kareokee, the audience is not encouraged to accompany the singer, nor are the lyrics
viewable to all...In addition, a portion of the evening, is set aside for Ball room and Line
dancing, enjoyed by many.
Many Sunday Nighters, would like to have the original format re-instated....
Any input?

Double check, best Italian food
Chris and I made a spur of the moment trip to Paisano’s. We believe Capt John (5/26) but we had to check the cheese dispenser, it was pristine, Luigi from Palermo assured us that he cleans it daily. The pizza was great and the newly-decorated super-clean cozy ambience is just right for small groups of CV’ers. Some customers walk from CV.

I spoke to Dave this afternoon. No surgery scheduled on his other hip yet and he has no infection any more. He is really frustrated because he does not know why it is not scheduled. He loves his new hip and cannot figure out why he didn't do it long ago.

The Obnoxious Anonymous
I see annoying Anonymous is bugging some bloggers. ‘He’ is trying to discourage you from posting, he cannot stand interesting energetic bloggers. It really does not matter what negative comments he makes, they are meaningless, embittered, and illogical. The subtext of the comments is to discourage you from posting. My answer to that is posting triple ;-0
How many idea-crushing, discouraging words can you find from Anonymous on the Blog?
*Nasty criticism - not constructive in any way.
*If that is the biggest problem you have, you have no problems - that is to make any following commenter feel unimportant.
*Doom - It cannot be done, no way.
*Gloom – Everyone feels differently, they will complain, it is useless to try.
*Status Quo – Everything is fine as is, old way UCO is perfect.
*Introducing something distracting and completely off thread, like lets have a poll’.
*** So, ignore Anonymous if not constructive.

You don't have to be told to watch this (click here to be told when), since it affects you!
At the time we voted with these outdated computer punchcards, New Yorkers were using voting booths with a lever system. They were able to keep tally of how many people voted for who without requiring electricity. Because there's nothing computerized about this system, it's unhackable. Who would dump a perfect system for something too scifi or not scifi enough?

News from The Villages
(Ocala area) “Well it finally happened! Just how bright do you have to be to stick your hand inside the fence and have a Buffalo bite it.....Well apparently three genius's have done just that and now they want money from THE VILLAGES,Now of course the lawyers for THE VILLAGES have suggested that they move the beasts away from the public to prevent this from becoming a supplemental income proposition...If there is not a club here yet called THE VILLAGE IDIOTS, Then I suggest we start one...First however we should teach them how to read as there are signs everywhere....”

Neighborhood Booster
Do you read Neighborhood of the Week, PB Post on Saturdays. They review specific neighborhoods and give them a BIG SALES BOOST. This week Palm Greens at Villa Delray, “residents are savvy and involved in this physical and cerebral community. No condo commandos allowed. ..the people are very, very, very friendly,..you become family. Comparable to Century Village but better looking” (they must have seen the Haverhill Gate)
Previously Leisureville “.. if coffee and doughnuts in the clubhouse every morning makes you smile, this 55-and-over community might be for you.” Leisureville has a revitalization cmte. Maintenance fees of $112 per month cover lawn care, the sprinkler system, repainting the homes and roofs every four years, maintaining the heated pools and spas, the clubhouses, and golf on the private course. Median home price last year was $110K. Lots of helpful statistics are given and prices of condos for sale. Its good to look inside many communities without an inordinate amount of realtor time.

Carbonite PC Backup
The easiest and best IMHO. Flat-priced, off-site, unlimited storage Carbonite. All your computer work is backed up and double encrypted on their servers. If your pc crashes or condo burns, your data is safe. You do not lift a finger (send $49/yr) it runs continuously in the background. Mozy is good too but I prefer Carbonite. UCO Reporter might want to look into this. If you send me a note I will send you a referral link that will get you an extra month on the service. wanderbrit@yahoo.com This is my kind of easy, yes I use it. Note: free trial too. I much prefer this to flash sticks or restore service on the pc, they have both failed me. As always, read the details.

Term Limit WHY?
If you’ve read the current UCO Reporter, I’m sure you noticed the offering by the Administration Shill to promote one very bad idea. A shill is someone whose praises are motivated by self-interest.
The UCO by-laws do not need any tampering regarding the very effective term limits issue. They were placed there many years ago, when those proposing it realized no one person should be allowed to occupy any one office indefinitely. Just the fire in the belly of any newly elected to do their very best, is itself one very compelling reason to allow the limits to stand. Another is to make damn certain UCO promotes and encourages the next generation of qualified applicants to become involved in the governance of this Village, which this Administration can still accomplish.
How is it possible that UCO has survived without the proposed tampering? Every year we have elections and while the Nominations Committee was originally developed to go out and beat the bushes for qualified applicants to run for "officers" of UCO, most recently we have had more applicants than seats to fill. That, ladies and gentlemen, is Democracy at work.
Frankly, we should completely update the Articles of incorporation….FIRST! And while entertaining such complexities, propose term limits for the entire elected body, INCLUDING the Executive Board, currently filled with familiar names who no longer propose any NEW ideas or even see the problems at hand…like the failure of the AREAS to pick-up the paper once it is printed.
Changing times call for change, but not going backwards. Isn’t it bad enough that Channel 63 is using our information station to bore us to death with a presentation out of the 1950’s?
Progress in hindsight is to get the residents involved and Term limits do just that. Change would be to include all elected, not revert to elected officers entrenched for the next millennium, especially when they continue to lack vision and computer expertise. And lest we forget the failed rent strike and registry encouraged by all of the Administration, and the Arbitration, even though they fully were aware of NO significant facts to sway the arbitrators, which is precisely the veiled reason for the Mediation and settlement.
Sometimes change is good! And I do hope I've anwsered your question, sir.
That's my view, what's yours?

Hi All,

Century Village: Where Today’s Hollywood Stars Don’t Matter
By Frank Cerabino Wednesday, May 14, 2008, 03:12 PM
Whatever happened to the real actors, anyway?
We here at The Blogaroni occasionally tap into Century Village’s pulse (weak, erratic) in the always entertaining “blog and chat” started by Dave Israel, a tech-savvy senior who lives in the West Palm Beach retirement community.
A recent item submitted by another resident bemoaned the selection of movies picked to play at the condo’s clubhouse theater. Here it is.
Maybe it’s because their eggos aren’t preggos
The movies, Juno, starring Ellen Page; 27 Dresses, starring Katherine Heigl; and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke, may be star-studded movies to their grandkids.
But at Century Village, Ellen Page is no Patti Page, and the Katharine that draws a crowd is a Hepburn, not a Heigl.
So when these movies were slated to run at Century Village, they were met with a combination of mystification, disappointment and the sense that residents were being fed a slew of second-rate entertainments.
“Notice the actors’ names,” griped a resident on the Century Village blog. “They must be very well known somewhere, perhaps on the moon.”
Or perhaps in the rest of America.
Another resident responded: “Stoning is too good for whoever is picking the movies.”
Raising (Michael) Caine
Another responded: “On the average I enjoy one out of the four monthly offerings, so I go to the libraries to see better ones.”
Beleaguered movie stars take note
So if any of today’s biggest Hollywood stars need a place to hide out for awhile in total anonymity, let me suggest Century Village, where they’ll just be assumed to be somebody’s visiting grandchildren.

UCO Reporter Delivery
Good suggestion Elaine. Why couldn't the profits from the Reporter be used to pay someone to deliver the papers?
Did you know the Palm Beach Post pays it's delivery people, to deliver to each doorway every morning, 9 cents per paper? If we sought help for delivery of 29 areas, which might take 30 minutes an area, (based on delivery in the Chatham Area made up of 21 buildings) the job might take 2 to 3 days per month. For 20 hours monthly at a cost of $ 30.00 per hour our monthly expense would be $ 600.00 or $ 7,200.00 annually, much better than someone dying trying to deliver newspapers that lives in the Village especially during the summer months. Would the family just sue UCO for wrongful death
The Reporter SHOULD consider this: 1. Not all areas do pick up. 2 Our Volunteers are an aging group and we have been lucky that none have DIED delivering the paper in all these years. and 3. As the older volunteers become unable or wish to cut back on their volunteering, NO one want that job!
How is it we can receive the Post or other papers without bankrupting the papers and yet UCO has not even explored this issue?
The time has come! C’mon UCO, get with the program!
That’s my view, What’s yours?

Gas prices
I have been thinking about the price of gas. (haven't we all) I can afford it because I no longer have a car payment but I don't want to afford it. So I have been thinking of trying to not use the car at all at least one day a week. Then I continued thinking about the almost empty buses that go by here every hour. I think our bus service is one of the big pluses of this village and very important to many of our residents. I know they are trying to adjust the schedule to save us some money. I applaud that. I was wondering if it would make sense to have one day a week without buses. I think that would be easier to adjust to than cutting some of the runs. I haven't thought this through for what it would do to the drivers. I don't know if they work 7 day weeks. So far I am only thinking of the fuel.

In order to allay any concerns about David’s next surgery, I must bring you up-to-date.
On Monday, May 12, 2008 David was to have had his second surgery for hip replacement.
That was derailed because of concerns about the original site ( first surgery ) possible infection. To that end they are continuing to delay the proposed second surgery, while they allow his system to completely recover from the first procedure.
Will keep you informed of progress as I can.

Food Stories, then and now
We seem to have a great interest in restaurants, cheese, fruit (coconuts) on this blog. So I thought it might be nice if folks wanted to write in about the foods of their lives. I bet we all associate certain foods with many good memories.
It would be fun to hear stories from the ladies/gents telling us of the types of foods they served their families, baking specialties, wonderful barbeque favorites from those lazy Sunday evenings, any kind of food stories from long ago or even last night’s dinner with friends.
A terrific example would be the story Ken told on Elaine’s post about childhood memories. He shared how he and his wife and kids would head to the Gulf water beaches and cook breakfast on the beach with their coleman stove.
It would be wonderful to hear more of these type of stories, or just about foods that you love to eat right now, right this minute.
Anybody have a good food story or just a treat you love to eat?

Landscaping
I was not going to grumble this week but really! We are paying for landscaping. The plants around the clubhouse entrance are foliage plants selected for their variety of leaf shapes and shades of green. The walking irises were hacked and butchered. No more graceful leaves and seedpods – horrid, why? Dead leaves could be removed by hand although there were hardly any before the hacking.
Most of the coconuts were removed a couple of weeks ago, ostensibly to prevent them falling on your heads. However, some of the highest nuts were left, those that could actually hurt you or your windshield, eh! we don’t have a ladder for those. Photo Dover yesterday.
Haverhill entrance will look much better soon, then we can have an after pic.

Insomnia
Insomnia is a horrible thing. Does it happen to any of you? I went to sleep around 10:30 PM last night, and there I am on the computer at 3:30 PM in the morning.
They say that a person needs to allow themselves enough sleep in order for the body to heal and function properly. Well, no matter how I try to do the right thing, my body won’t let me get more than 5 hours of sleep a night!
Does anyone have some good solutions for this problem? It’s tough going through your day feeling tired all the time. Actually – it’s the pits!
a very tired,

This time - "and then there were 4" ! That's one more person than our first go around! If we continue to have these parties and if they continue to grow by only 1 person each time - just think, by the end of the year we will have a nice group and a whole bunch of brand new friends!
Thanks to Mike, Elaine and Nutmegger! You are all even better in person!!!
We already have plans to do it again. Next time we're going to Cappuccino's Italian Restaurant. Nutmegger highly recommends it. Anyone for Italian? Flynn, I bet you won't find your moldy parmesan at Cappuccino's.
It was a great time with truly a lot of laughs. The only thing that would have made it better, is if Dave had been with us. We miss our friend. But, hopefully next time!

chicken ....
Why did the chicken cross the road? BARACK OBAMA:The chicken crossed the road because it was time for a CHANGE! The chicken wanted CHANGE! JOHN MC CAIN:My friends, that chicken crossed the road because he recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the road. HILLARY CLINTON:When I was First Lady, I personally helped that little chicken to cross the road. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure -- right from Day One! -- that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn ' t about me.......
DR. PHIL:The problem we have here is that this chicken won’t realize that he mustfirst deal with the problem on ' THIS ' side of the road before it goesafter the problem on the ' OTHER SIDE ' of the road. What we need to do ishelp him realize how stupid he's acting by not taking on his ' CURRENT 'problems before adding ' NEW ' problems.OPRAH:Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why hewants to cross this road so bad. So instead of having the chicken learnfrom his mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life, I ' m going togive this chicken a car so that he can just drive across the road andnot live his life like the rest of the chickens.GEORGE W. BUSH:We don ' t really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want toknow if the chicken is on our side of the road, or not. The chicken iseither against us, or for us. There is no middle ground here.COLIN POWELL:Now to the left of the screen, you can clearly see the satellite imageof the chicken crossing the road...ANDERSON COOPER - CNN:We have reason to believe there is a chicken, but we have not yet beenallowed to have access to the other side of the road.JOHN KERRY:Although I voted to let the chicken cross the road, I am now against it!It was the wrong road to cross, and I was misled about the chicken ' sintentions. I am not for it now, and will remain against it.NANCY GRACE:That chicken crossed the road because he's GUILTY! You can see it in hiseyes and the way he walks.PAT BUCHANAN:To steal the job of a decent, hardworking American.MARTHA STEWART:No one called me to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had astanding order at the Farmer's Market to sell my eggs when the pricedropped to a certain level. No little bird gave me any insiderinformation.DR SEUSS:Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, thechicken crossed the road, but why it crossed I've not been told.ERNEST HEMINGWAY:To die in the rain. Alone.JERRY FALWELL:Because the chicken was gay! Can t you people see the plain truth? 'That's why they call it the ' other side. 'Yes, my friends, that chickenis gay. And if you eat that chicken, you will become gay too. I say weboycott all chickens until we sort out this abomination that the liberalmedia white washes with seemingly harmless phrases like ' the other side. That chicken should not be crossing the road. It' s as plain and assimple as that.GRANDPA:In my day we didn t ask why the chicken crossed the road. Somebody toldus the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough.BARBARA WALTERS:Isn't that interesting? In a few moments, we will be listening to thechicken tell, for the first time, the heart warming story of how itexperienced a serious case of molting, and went on to accomplish itslife long dream of crossing the road.ARISTOTLE:It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.JOHN LENNON:Imagine all the chickens in the world crossing roads together, in peace.BILL GATES:I have just released eChicken2007, which will not only cross roads, butwill lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your checkbook. Internet Explorer is an integral part of the Chicken. This newplatform is much more stable and will never cra...#@&&^(C% .........reboot.ALBERT EINSTEIN:Did the chicken really cross the road, or did the road move beneath thechicken?BILL CLINTON:I did not cross the road with THAT chicken. What is your definition ofchicken?AL GORE:I invented the chicken!COLONEL SANDERS:Did I miss one?DICK CHENEY:Where ' s my gun?AL SHARPTON:Why are all the chickens white? We need some black chickens.

Swallow-Tailed Kite
First one I ever saw - large elegant bird in CV yesterday. Graceful black and white swooping around - Hawk and Eagle, family wingspan over 4'. The more mature the bird, the longer the V tail. It stopped by for lunch, 2 baby mockingbirds and 2 lizards. (They also eat large insects and snakes). I was looking forward to watching the mockingbirds grow in the nest in my orange tree (sigh).

CABLE TV
Author: Larry Kall (---.hsd1.fl.comcast.net)
Date: 05-02-08 20:58
I read the following Comcast statement today at the delegates meeting regarding the digital TV conversion:
" The good news is this transition should have no impact whatsoever on Comcast customers.Because they are connected to cable, all of our customers will continue to receive broadcast channels without interruption after the digital broadcast transition. They will be able to receive the new digital signals through new digital-ready TV's or boxes purchased in retail stores or through their existing digital set-top converter.
We will deliver broadcast signals digitally and we will convert the new broadcast digital signals back into analog signals at our headends so that customers who do not have or want a digital box or new TV will continue to receive the channels in the same way they receive them today without having to do anything."
I received this information by fax communication on 4/49/08.

Auto Spa Reco
I used my FREE coupon for the Works car wash at Auto Spa, (did everyone get these coupons) what a deal worth $23 or $38 depending on which ad you read! They asked for a recommendation if I was pleased with the job. They have it, it was excellent, they even removed the degraded rubber stuck to the edge of my windows, my car is gleaming. They may have overdone the fragrance a little, my car was like the house of a thousand leis, made me quite woozy. Go south on Military to 1450 Military on left, used to be Mr Bubble, great guys.

BLOG PARTY - THURSDAY, MAY 8, at 6:00 PM, please come all!
THE NEW STORY...
Blog Party: Thursday, May 8 at 6:00 pm
Location: Panera Bread on Village Blvd.
Menu: Self Serve, comfortable seating, soup, salads, sandwiches, good coffee, nice, clean.
Important update: We have the little room reserved. We could not get it until 6:00 pm.
I will be there at 5:45 pm.
Here is the link for anyone who would like to look at the soup, sandwich, salad menu in advance:
http://www.panerabread.com/
All of the below is how we got to the new story above......
Is anybody available any day at all next week for a very easy gathering?
We could do it somewhere very simple - like Panera Bread on Village. Self serve, soup, sandwiches, good coffee. Order what you want, pick it up - seat yourself. Stay as long as you want. Nobody bothers you. Comfy too.
It could be a very easy one. It doesn't have to be our last one - we could think of this as simply a fresh start to saying hello. No big deal!!!
Cheap, clean - easy.
Say the word. Wednesday is the only night that will not work for me.

How was your childhood?
I am quite entranced by a piece in the previous UCO Reporter. Avis’ recipe for calla lily sandwiches reflects her childhood. Little girls pushing dolly carriages in the park while mommy made dainty sandwiches like flowers, I expect there were apple and cherry blossoms floating on the sunny breezes too.
I remember UK blackout curtains, gas mask, no meat, no chocolate, refugees, POWs, playing hide n’seek in the bomb craters was fun!
I had a younger friend raised in farmland of NY State, wild berries, fishing, swimming holes, idyllic – not good when they slammed him into Vietnam and Thailand.
How was your childhood?

The 3rd Gate and Group Rights
The open the door thread got so far off topic lets start again.
Giacomo said “UCO Officials will have try an make a reasonable solution for those? who may need assistance to go and come”. Anytime you begin a thought with “UCO should” you might as well forget it. Their budget is not going to do it.
Let me say this about catering to individual wishes in CV. It is too big for that!
And we are not an assisted living facility.
We have buses, and benches, and pools, and clubs, etc. OK.
There are laws for the handicapped, that’s fine.
We should not change our ways for religious requests, there are too many religions here.
There are too many people here who think their way is the only way and that they are right all the time. Others come from hard times and are only too happy to have whatever is offered here.
These are condos, its communal living in many ways.
I’m not even going to go into multi-language issues, there are probably laws on that too.
