ADDENDUM TO "IN DEFENCE OF MIT"

The original posting of 2/09@3:33PM by elaine b, in part refers to the statement made
at the Delegate' Assembly Meeting, by the Nominating Committee Chair, who stated
that " The candidate's Bio did not want the fact that you graduated from MIT or
Princeton, or anything like that" Adhering to that request, my bio, that was submitted for publication in the Reporter,(received today,) detailed MY involvement
in Century Village ONLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!UNLIKE the MAJORITY of Candidates,
endorsed by the committee, who submitted every detail, short of their sexual preference and current romantic involvement, I complied, leaving me at a
disadvantage. My Bio is posted elsewhere on this site, but does not reach the
masses, am I to conclude this was deliberate, or the usual ERROR?

Nominating Committee Rejections

Is this committee exempt from an explanation as to why a particular individual
was not given their endorsement, or is it "Business as usual" "Player or non-Player"

--------------------------------------------------------------
Your BLOGMEISTER replies:

Hi Betty,
I am taking the unusual step of inserting a reply here because this is a Pet Peeve of mine:

I sat one cycle as a member of the Nominating Committee, perhaps two or three years ago; and I was not happy with how it functioned.
--
I asked for the written criteria used in evaluating applicants; there was none!!
--
Then proceeded a totally AD-Hoc process with no real validity whatsoever.
--
Highly qualified applicants (IMHO), were eliminated because they did not agree with the Administration. This I found totally unacceptable.
--
The process is highly flawed and needs to be revamped or eliminated.

WHY IS THE VOTE COUNT FOR VP SUCH A DARK SECRET

I and I am sure many other unit owners would like to know how many
votes each candidate running for VP received? We as unit owners are
we not entitled to know? We were told the vote count of the 3 candidates
that ran for President. Why is the vote count for the candidates that
ran for VP such a DARK SECRET.

FOR GEORGE 104, AGAINST GEORGE 141, A GLIMMER OF HOPE

Hi All,
In the Comment stream; Jeane Dowling posted the following:

Well, here we are again, where we left off before the insane July 11 meeting.

If you add Dave,s and Phyllis' votes, the village really does not want the present group back. It's unfortunate that Phyllis did not withdraw so we could start with a new slate. If all of those buildings that voted to oust this group withdrew from UCO, it would colapse and we could start a better system.

Think about it. This time, we could remedy all of the mistakes in structure, we are now stuck with.
Another thought..if you are not very smart, you surround yourself with people who are less intelligent than you. If you are bright, you realize that you need the best brains available to help run an organization.

As for the religion issue, it was evident in this election and was a major factor when the Marshall group was defeated. God help the village if those of you who voiced your need for change do not stay united and on target for continuing to work for change.

And to those who still want to bash me, there is nothing left that you can accuse me of or say about me that you haven't already. You wouldn't attact me if you were not afraid of me because I stand up for what I believe and I put my money where my mouth is.

No matter what you say or do to me I will always be here to watch you and fight your closed meetings, hidden finances, undemocratic closed media and all of the other attrocities you try to perpetrate on this village.

I saw today that I am no longer alone but 140 other people want you out also.

GEORGE 104 CENTURY VILLAGE ZERO!!!

Hi All,

I am advised that in the Election for President of UCO; the vote was:

1) George Loewenstein.......................104

2) Dave Israel....................................... 90

3) Phyllis Richland............................... 51

I do not know if this is accurate as I got it second hand.

de Tocqueville reputedly said that “in a democracy, the people get the government they deserve"

To those of you who George dredged up by cruising both local temples, in his blatant playing of the "Religion Card" I say "rig for heavy weather"

You have literally enabled the lunatics to take over the asylum. How after witnessing the shameful debacle of July 11th. 2008 could you grant any credibility to this petulant child, who, when reversed by his Board of Directors, quit in childish snit!

Where is the leadership, where is the morality and ethics? Situational at best outright toxic at worst.

As I left the Theater after Delegate Assembly, I encountered Howie Silver; he immediately acted out his genetic code instructions and flashed me a vigorous "short arm salute", charming, Howie, simply charming"

Where will King George get the credibility to run UCO? His 104 votes are hardly a mandate, so I say to those of you who cherish the freedoms we hold so dear in America; attend every meeting, insist on your rights as Unit Owners, if enough disinfecting sunshine engulfs King George, perhaps he can be induced to do the right thing again; resign; or emulate the movie vampires and simply vaporise in a puff of fire and smoke!!!

For the moment; I suggest that those of us who still retain our sanity and reason seriously consider a movement to recall King George before we are once again sucked back into the Dark Ages.

DAVE ISRAEL FOR PRESIDENT OF UCO

Hi All,
Following is a letter of support written by five Unit Owners. You will note that among other things, I have called for the integration of Professional, Subject expert, staff in the running of the 5 million dollar BUSINESS that is UCO. As an example, I gave Financial operations and Investigative services.

In neither case would this lead to the firing or removal of any paid employee or volunteer. For example, let's look at Investigative Services; If we hired a paid subject expert to sit in UCO spaces who would conduct Credit and Criminal Background checks using a computer in UCO and paid him/her $40,000.00 /year; we would save some $110,000.00/year.

How could this be, you may ask? Simple; at $100.00/investigation, multiplied by 1500 investgations per year, we are now spending some $150,000.00/year of Unit Owner money.

Clearly, the difference is no small matter. A trained professional could reach into places that we currently do not access and do a much better job than our current Investigative firm. The hard working volunteers jobs of dealing with the Associations would not change one iota.

The Professional Subject Agent would simply feed our volunteers the work product "up close and personal", taylored to our needs.

Ignore the rediculous rumors, UCO is a BUSINESS, and must be run as such, paid and volunteer positions are safe, if I am elected:

Dave Israel (Candidate for UCO President)

A Good Man for the Job at a Needed Time

There are a number of us who believe Dave Israel is the right man for the job of UCO president at this time. We would appreciate your reading this letter.

The Village has come through some difficult times over the past four years, and we are not out of these difficult times. Florida's hurricanes, including the three that hit us in a two-year period, have had a lasting, widespread effect.

Insurance rates have gone way up, and insurance is being required where it was optional before.

Building code requirements are stricter and thus more costly, also. Running the Village at both the local association level and the overall (UCO) level gets more and more expensive.

There is a critical need for
(1) accountability to all owners and associations through their delegates and the media,
(2) clear explanations about complicated matters, and
(3) honest, wise, caring, and capable people in the top positions.

Transparency is a vital ingredient. Dave Israel took a step in this direction when he instituted the Internet blog, open to anyone's comments.

Those who pressed for truly open meetings at the July 11 delegates meeting took another vital step in this direction.

Yes, there can be some problems to be overcome in having meetings be "open," but they should not be compared to the alternative—having important, costly matters discussed and decided upon behind closed doors by a select few.

Closed-door meetings shut out the possibility of wise counsel, including perhaps good cost-saving suggestions, coming from outside the select group. Closed-door meetings at their worst are an encouragement to shady dealings taking place.

Dave is a leading proponent of open meetings.

It is not a good indicator to us when the UCO president and a vice president resign after the delegates overwhelmingly vote for enforcement of strictly open meetings—especially as open meetings have already supposedly been our policy in having adopted the Sunshine Laws a few years ago.

It is even less a good indicator—in fact, quite frankly, one's suspicions cannot help being aroused—when within a few days of resigning, the same president and vice president do a complete turnabout and place themselves in the running for the same offices they vacated.

What else is Dave Israel for?

He is for hiring professional people in two areas: financial and investigations. We do not mean to criticize those volunteers who have worked in these departments. Many have put in long hours and much effort. But we agree with Dave that in a multi-million dollar operation, we need top-quality expertise to save money in our financial operations.

And we need professional expertise in the investigations department at a time when litigation abounds and an association could be sued for turning down a prospective owner or renter.

Do we even have the reserve funds now that we should have in order to pay for such litigation? We don't know, because the present administration closes off so much to any inspection.

• Dave has a great deal of experience in running important things. Please take a look at his bio. The United States government has entrusted him with a lot. He wants to gather people around him who can help make the difficult decisions that have to be made and save us from disastrous financial mistakes.

Dave also wants to inform every resident in as clear a manner as possible concerning complicated matters. He would use the UCO Reporter to this end, changing it from being opinion piece after opinion piece to largely unbiased reporting of the news.

How can this be accomplished? The news can probably never be presented in a completely unbiased manner, but the effort should be made. Newspapers, as we all know, have their news separate from commentary.

Dave realizes that to accomplish this as UCO president, his own administration must be especially scrupulous to avoid pushing only "their" way of seeing things. We believe Dave will make that honest effort.

If you have read this letter through, we thank you indeed. We hope that those of you who are delegates will vote for Dave Israel for president of UCO. Above all, we respect your participation in the democratic process.

Sincerely,

RESIDENT OWNERS:

Daniel Besson
Phyllis Borrelli
Lawrence Howe
Peggy Steenbuck

Good Luck to all Candidates

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the candidates who have chosen to run for office whether you win or not. You should be proud that you did run and I wish you all good luck on Friday . No matter what the outcome UCO will be a better and stronger when this election is concluded.

CV Q&A gets real

From Q&A: we know it is really Jules, long-time protector of our community, because its Q&A.

Author: Jules Sitnick 7/29/08

After many years living at Century Village and having served the residents as an instructor for over a decade, illness forced me to cut down on activities.

Last year, because the president of my association refused to go to delegate meetings, I insisted he appoint me (a board member) as delegate of our building.

Since attending the meetings I have discovered why he refused to go to meetings and why our building does not follow the UCO recommended by-laws.

The meetings are held without regard for unit owners wishes and/or desires.

There is a wall of egomania that pervades the meeting with constant dissent and childish rhetoric blasting the atmosphere.

Recently the president and vice-president of UCO resigned stating that they felt the assembly was not supporting them.

Yet at the recent delegates meeting these same people are once again running for their same office. I don't know if that is permissible or not, but it is certainly immoral if ethical.

If you are not wanted, by your own admission, why try to force yourself on the unit owners? Does it make you a better person or more useful to be where you will be less effective in doing your volunteer job?

I may be naive or ill-informed, but I feel the unit owners are not being served by this kind of administration.

WHAT DO CANDIDATES DO?

How About a Debate?

Since we have a number of candidates for offices, how about having a debate among those running for the same office?

For president: Israel, Loewenstein, Richland.

For vice president: Davis, Karpf, LaBonte, Marshall, Silver, Ziccardy.

This would give us all a better insight as to who we personally would support.

This would draw a large group of CVers to help make their decisions.

On another note, just to keep a little levity in this situation: CV seems to have a dog problem. How about a few people running for dogcatcher? Just think: The dog problem could be handled by a committee. Decisions could be made as to where a dog could relieve itself, get a drink of water or under what conditions it would be permissable for the dog to bite someone. I think we all would like a debate among those of us who would like to run for the office of CV Dog Committee Chair. Keep thinking, it helps to avoid senior moments.

ELECTIONS AND SANITY THE CHOICE IS CLEAR

I know I wasn't fooling anyone but myself when I posted this as anonymous, as I apparently leave a heavy literary footprint in my postings. Sorry folks, won't happen again. What many of those up North don't realize is that this meeting had a purpose of the utmost importance... to expose an administration that was against "open meetings"... a position which had been supported by the UCO Bylaws for five years.

The attempt to illegally reverse this established policy was met with resistance by a few devoted individuals, whose only purpose was to serve the best interests of the Village.

The circulars which encouraged "Vote NO for Open Meetings" were prominately placed at the "check-in" tables in front of the auditorium. Of course these circulars were printed on paper and with office equipment from UCO, using your funds to deprive you of your right to attend meetings.

At these meetings "Out of the Sunshine" decisions are being made as to how your money is being spent. Ironically, those who were against closed meetings were not permitted to present their side of the story in the Clubhouse (which we also support, but do not own).

We had no choice but to circulate our fliers for Open Meetings by the medical center, outside the gates of W.P.R.F. property. Many cars stopped to receive our fliers, and enough Delegates were informed in time, that the meeting they were about to attend was orchestrated to deprive them of their right to Open Meetings.

The Delegates prevailed and the "Open Meeting Resolution" was nearly unanimously passed. V.P. Howard's stall tactics proved ineffective. The motion was properly placed on the floor, debated, and approved by a near unanimous vote.

Why is UCO so afraid to open itself up to public scrutiny? Why is UCO so intent on depriving you of your right to attend and particpate in the process of spending our money?

The very same officers who resigned at the end of this meeting because the voice of the people fell too harshly upon their ears, amazingly reappeared weeks later to run for the very offices that they have resigned from.

This will go down in history as The Election of the Phoenix's. Nixon was the only President in history to get reelected on the same campaign promise that he never fulfilled,"Our withdrawal from Vietnam"!

Our Officers ran on a platform of "transparency". Transparency behind closed doors? How many times will we permit ourselves to be fooled by political rhetoric which never manifests itself in action. We deserve what we get if enough of the electorate turns a blind eye to reality on election day. Lord help us all!

I will take this as an endorsement Randall, and thanks,
Dave

WHAT HAS CHANGED

Lunatics attempt to retake the asylum

Zeitgeist

.
n. The spirit of the time; the taste and outlook characteristic of a period or generation!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Were you at the Special Nominating Convention of the Delegate Assembly on 25 July, 2008?

Were you at the Delegate Assembly meeting on July 11, 2008?

What happened in but a scant 14 days?

On July 11, the Delegate Assembly was treated to a shameful meltdown of VP Howie Silver; with President Loewenstein, in background” pulling his strings.

Do you remember; “If you don’t like it, there is the door.”
Do you remember the effort to sabotage the meeting by “introducing everybody and their brother” in a crude effort to run out the clock and prevent a motion from coming to the floor which was designed to restore Democracy to the Village.

Finally when the Board of Directors reversed President Loewenstein; he did the only right thing he has done in months, he resigned, as did VP Howie Silver, in a just expiation of their vile behavior.

The entire flaming Gotterdammerung was typical of the ongoing overt disrespect of the Unit Owners of Century Village.

If you have any doubt as to the shameful nature of the performance, please watch the “George and Howie show” Video recording of the entire event on our Village Service and information channel CVTV Channel 63 at 9:00am and 6:00pm.

Now, what happened at the Nominating Convention on 25 July??

In an incredible exercise of self flagellation, the body politic mortified itself by Nominating Mr. Loewenstein and Mr. Silver for President and Vice President respectively.

Should they be elected it would be a classical case of “The Lunatics Taking over the Asylum”
A theater of the absurd Marx Brothers farce!!
This reflects a zeitgeist of apathy, toadyism, naked patronage and religious coercion; it must not stand; those who believe in Balanced Democratic Government in the Sunshine must rise to crush this attempt to plunge us back into the quagmire of repression and secrecy.

DELEGATES, on July 11, 2008 you correctly asserted yourselves as THE Principle legal power in our Corporation; do not let the old regime snatch it back from you. On August 1, 2008 when you vote; REMEMBER July 11th. It was nothing less than our Declaration of Independence, our Bastille day!

What has changed that would justify some 50 persons rising as a body to second and thus reinstate the demonstrated reprobates to the corridors of UCO power; these supporters were part of the same body that but 14 days ago voted these two down.

So, what strange Machiavellian powers did they exercise; what coercion was employed? Was it the religion card that was typically played? Was it a threat to loose a job in UCO, or a spot on a Committee? What happened, Delegates, to cause you to lose your integrity and bow down at the alter of BAL!!!

Think about it; in any reputable Corporation in the Nation, if three key Directors, IE, the President, and two Vice Presidents had suddenly resigned, there would have been a lockdown of the Corporation records (was there any shredding of documents?) and a complete Forensic Audit of the books. What does Mr. Loewenstein have to hide that caused him to rush back from Israel to burst upon the Delegate Assembly with this bombshell?

I say again; what has changed?? Is Mr. Loewenstein now in full favor of completely Open Meetings, absent by permission of the Committee Chair? Is he now in favor of reaffirmation of Term Limits for Officers of UCO, is he now in favor of legal noticing of meetings?

Two Presidential Candidates, Phyllis Richland and David Israel have called for a full forensic audit of the Corporation Finances by an Independent Auditor or Accounting firm, not the cozy firm we use now; Will Mr. Loewenstein publicly call for such an audit??

If Mr. Loewenstein is reelected, is he prepared to inform the Unit Ownership exactly how much was paid to Attorney Denise Bleau in pursuit of a case less law suit; Is he prepared to present a line by line justification of the Budget; is he prepared to properly fund key projects like Shoreline restoration and hurricane deductible liability; Is he prepared to identify which Budget line items he raided to pay Ms. Bleau, is he prepared to restore amicable and business like relations with W.P.R.F., Inc. which he destroyed with baseless accusations…
What has changed to justify this shameless power grab??

Dave Israel

ABG Anybody but George

Here we go, CV imitating the USA again. For those of you who were not at yesterday’s Special Delegate Assembly, it was the Return of the (Sith) (living dead) (bad judgement) fill in your own movie. George Loewenstein REappeared to run for president after resigning. This is not forbidden in FL statute probably because the lawmakers never thought such a destructive action would be possible. Already George used his influence to get the front page of the UCO Reporter held for late assembly to get publicity i.e. his version of the last Delegate Mtg. for himself and Howie Silver. Brace yourselves for the usual George methods of blackening everyone else’s reputation, whisper, whisper, no facts, he did a thorough job on the last administration that were struggling with hurricanes. Take care out there and do not believe vague rumors.
